Ila Arun: ‘Did less work, but good work’ after 40 years in movies.
Ila Arun has worked in film, theater, indie music, Discovery of India, Yatra with Benegal, and now Aarya 3, her web series debut.
Ila Arun, a veteran actor and folk singer who has just completed 40 years in the film industry, says that even if it's difficult to stand out in a city as competitive as Mumbai, opportunities have always presented themselves to her.
Arun made her acting debut in the 1983 film Mandi, directed by Shyam Benegal and widely regarded as one of the best Hindi films ever made. Prior to that, she had achieved success as a singer in India with songs like "Morni Baaga Ma Bole" and "Choli Ke Peeche," as well as the pop tunes "Bichhuda" and "Nigodi Kaisi Jawani Hai."She has worked in film, theater, independently produced music, the television shows Discovery of India and Yatra with Benegal, and most recently, she is making her debut with the online series Aarya 3."I have been engaging viewers through a variety of different means. It's been such a pleasure... Something unthinkable came to pass. It is challenging to keep up with all of stuff. That is the first obligation that you have.
You are able to take care of it when you protect yourself from temptation and when you keep it preserved. After appearing in these shows and movies, I was a strong candidate for a variety of roles; however, actors quickly find that they are typecast. I hung around. Because I wanted to work with decent people, I didn't let my concerns get to me. I am not concerned about the size of the role that I will play. In that aspect, less work took place, but the work that did take place was good," the multi-hyphenate figure, who is 69 years old, said in an interview with PTI.
According to Ila Arun, who became interested in acting while performing in theater alongside Pinchoo Kapoor and her guru Mohan Maharishi at Jaipur's cultural landmark Ravindra Manch, perseverance and talent are the two most important factors in achieving one's goals.

"There are a lot of talented people in this world, but not everyone gets recognized for their efforts. Given the abundance of established musicians and performers in Mumbai, it is difficult to develop a name for oneself there. I never had any trouble getting through the doors. My greatest accomplishment is that I have never been seen groveling or pleading for job in front of other people. I have never put together a portfolio. I never approached somebody and said, "I want to sing or act," and I don't know why. Everything transpired in a slow and steady manner."Prior to beginning a career in film, she studied acting for a period of six months at Delhi's National School of Drama (NSD) in the 1970s. At the time, theatre legend Ebrahim Alkazi was serving as the school's director.

Native of Rajasthan Ila Arun stated that working in the film industry was never her intention, and when she first arrived in Mumbai, she sought out the Prithvi Theatre in order to establish "footing" in the city of dreams. She established the Surnai Theatre and Folk Arts Foundation as a charitable organization in the year 1983."When I had finished my training in the art, I told myself that I needed to accomplish something. When I first arrived in Bombay, I had no intention of getting involved in the film industry. I felt most comfortable in the theater environment, which is why I decided to work in that field. I was aware of the expectations the audience had of me and vice versa."The challenge of living the same one role for those three hours, without glycerine, without makeup, without touch-ups, without anything," she said. That is a very exciting development. However, after that, a large number of people working in the film industry joined Prithvi Theatre. She recalled that people would talk amongst themselves about one another's performances.

The artist claimed that she owed her success to the people of the middle class in Rajasthan, who have been singing her songs "Mera Assi Kali Ka Lehenga" and "Resham Ka Rumaal" for more than three decades now."That's my accomplishment for the year. Even at that point in time, members of Rajasthan's middle class... My voice used to be heard at the time throughout their school competitions, weddings, and pretty much everywhere else. I received a lot of love from people in the middle class... Even now, people keep asking me to choose my singing career over my acting career.
Many of her movies, including Sherni, Chhalaang, and Raat Akeli Hai, were released on streams almost immediately after their first release. Sushmita Sen is making her web series debut with the current season of Aarya, which is in its third season. The actor plays the role of Nalini, a former member of the royal family of Rajasthan, in the series that airs on Disney+ and Hotstar. Nalini is in competition with Sen's character, Aarya, to become the undisputed queen of the drug supply side of the business."For a commoner like me, who is always singing songs of the working class, dancers, or nomads, to all of a sudden represent a royal class who have their own grace, charm, and confidence is a bit of a stretch," she said. They have a certain disposition.
They never fail to crack a smile... It was suggested that I play a role similar to that one."One of the tools at your disposal as an actor is observation. Since I was born in Rajasthan and am familiar with both its history and its present, making the reference was simple for me. I often find myself rubbing elbows with the modern day nobility. "You can describe her as a don from the past who is ready for battle," she added. "You can also call her an authority figure from the past."The actor lauded the work of her crew as well as the creator of the program, Ram Madhvani, for giving her character a unique appearance.
I hadn't given much thought to how different my hair would look after the new haircut. Everyone urged me to get a haircut, but I steadfastly declined their offers. People recognize me by my hair, which serves as my signature. However, in order to get into the skin of diverse characters, artists have to experiment with a variety of different things."We worked with an incredible filmmaker by the name of Ram Madhvani, who has been quite successful with both seasons. Because he had a plan and an approach, we had no choice but to move in that general path. There is always the possibility of going too far with something. You won't find any other woman quite like Nalini when it comes to grace," Arun continued.
The third season of Aarya will become available to stream on Disney Plus and Hotstar on November 3.
